Plumages

Adult male: Leaden gray above, with a (usually concealed) large white interscapular patch bordered by a few blackish feathers. Paler below, white on belly. Throat black. Wing coverts black, edged gray with white fringes forming two indistinct bars; flight feathers edged gray. Tail feathers slate gray, broadly (3-4 mm) tipped white.

Adult female: Like male above. Throat and median underparts clear white, breast feathers fringed gray (giving scaled appearance). Sides gray. Very slight tinge of buff on sides of breast and belly.

Bare Parts

Iris: gray

Bill: black (male) or maxilla black, mandible gray (female)

Tarsi and toes: bright blue-gray

Measurements

Total length: 12 cm (Ridgely and Tudor 1994)

Mass: 11.5-14.5 g (Zimmer and Isler 2003)
