Geographic Variation

Two subspecies currently recognized:

Occurs from southern Mexico south to western Panama.

See Detailed Description.

tigrinus (Souancé 1856); described as Myiopsitta tigrina, type locality Venezuela

Occurs in the Andes, from Venezuela south to Peru. Includes maculatus (Ridgway 1915), from "eastern Peru?".

Similar to nominate lineola, but darker and more heavily barred (Juniper and Parr 1998).

Related Species

Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data, from both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, indicate that Bolborhynchus (represented by Bolborhynchus lineola) is sister to Nannopsittaca, and that the Bolborhynchus/Nannopsittaca clade is basal to the New World parrot radiation (Tavares et al. 2006, Schirtzinger et al. 2012).
