Related Species

The Azure-rumped Tanager belongs to the Neotropical genus Tangara, in which 49 species are currently recognized (AOU 1998 and supplements, Remsen et al. 2011). Azure-rumped Tanager is traditionally positioned closely to Gray-and-gold Tanager (Storer 1970, AOU 1998, Isler and Isler 1999, Dickinson 2003, Banks et al. 2008). Modern phylogenetic studies on the family did not include Azure-rumped Tanager because of a lack of material (Burns and Naoki 2004, Sedano and Burns 2010).
