Priorities for Future Research

Introduction

Ash-throated Antwren is a recently described species with a restricted geographic range, within which it is reported from only a few sites. Almost all aspects of its natural history are unknown. The most urgent priority is to better assess its distribution, to ascertain whether it in fact is restricted to the Río Mayo Valley or whether it occurs in adjacent, unsurveyed areas to the north and the south (Begazo et al. 2001), and also to better document rates of habitat loss within this region. Also valuable would be information on such demographic factors as territoriality, population densities, life span and survivorship, dispersal, or population regulation. Basic natural history information, especially with regard to the breeding biology, also should be investigated.
