Introduction
Apurimac Spinetail is a highly restricted-range species found in higher elevation forest habitats on the slopes around Nevada Ampay, on the south-western side of the Rio Apurimac, north of Abancay, Apurimac, south-central Peru. Confined to the Peruvian High Andes EBA 051 (Stattersfield et al. 1998), it is found between elevations of 2,450 –3,500 m. It is resident with no evidence of elevational/breeding movements. Originally its entire global population was thought to occur within the boundaries Ampay National Sanctuary (see Remsen 2003). However, since 1987 it has been found at several areas outside the sanctuary (Lloyd and Walker unpublished data) e.g. Huayrapata between Apurimac and Ayacucho, Pacaypata between Apurimac Cusco and Ayacucho, Cerro Turronmocco above Quisuar, and above Yanama town in the Vilcabamba Mountains on the way to Toruyocpampa (Fjeldså 1987, Aucca in litt. 2007).
