Conservation Status

Current IUCN Red List Category: Least Concern. Species is common within their large range and population size is stable (BirdLife International).

Effects of human activity on populations

Vanellus resplendens is closely associated with local cultures within its range. Outside of their use of human development as a food sourse, this species has important cultural function for these people. It has been used as a food source, ornamentation, and has been associated with mysticism and magic (Sarmiento 2010). However, despite this human attention, it has not noticeably decreased their population: if anything, agricultural activty and reverence for the species may have increased their numbers. As their range remains relatively untouched by urban development and industry, this species does not seem to be negatively affected by human activity.
