Amazonian Pygmy-Owl is resident in central and southwestern Amazonia. It occurs in northern Bolivia (Hennessey et al. 2003) and is widespread in southeastern and central Amazonian Peru;the distribution in Peru extends north of the Amazon (Stotz and Pequeño 2004, T.A. Parker unpublished observations, Schulenberg et al. 2010), but it is not (yet?) known from Ecuador (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001) nor from Colombia (Hilty and Brown 1986). The distribution extends east to eastern Venezuela (Hilty 2003), Guyana (Snyder 1966, Braun et al. 2007), Suriname (Ottema et al. 2009), and to French Guiana (Tostain et al. 1992).
In Peru the distribution of Amazonian Pygmy-Owl extends from the lowlands up to 1150 m (Walker et al. 2006, Schulenberg et al. 2010); in Bolivia it is reported only from 100-500 m (Hennessey et al. 2003).
