Distribution in the Americas

It can be found from southern Mexico to nor-eastern Ecuador, north of Bolivia, and central part of Brazil. In Mexico in southern Veracruz, Tabasco, Chiapas and Quintana Roo.

It is a resident species considered as rare or not common. Its distributional range has been calculated in 7,900,000 km2, and its global population has not been determined.

It inhabits ponds in lowland forests and rivers in tropical forests from the sea level to 1000 masl.
