Sections

This is the most northerly occurring member of the genus Pygoscelis; although its core range is the Sub-Antarctic, it can be found far up the Argentine coast, almost to Buenos Aires. The Gentoo forages relatively close to shore, and is the easiest species of Pygoscelis to see from land. In contrast to its congeners, it is also resident near many of its breeding colonies, al though some populations are partially migratory. Gentoo Penguins feed by pursuit-diving but there is considerable variation in feeding preferences. Highly dependent on locality, some populations feed on krill while others, particularly farther north, feed on various small fish and crustaceans.
