The Orange-eared Tanager is found in the countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Venezuela (Isler and Isler 1987, Hilty 2011). In Colombia this species is found on the west slope of the East Andes at the head of the Magdalena Valley, and from Caqueta southward through Ecuador and Peru. This species is also found in Cuzco, Peru to northwest Cochabamba, Bolivia (Hilty, Brown 1986). In Venezuela this species is only known from site records on the Mérida-Barinas border (Hilty 2003, 2011). This species is found between elevations of 900-2000 m but most sightings have been recorded in the East slope of the Andes in Peru between 1000-1700 m (Hilty 2011). This species is also found between 1600-1800m in the Magdalena Valley in Colombia, and as high as 1975 m on the Cordillera de Cutucú in Ecuador (Hilty and Brown 1986, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001). The center of elevational abundance is in the Upper Tropical zone (Parker et al. 1996). This species occurs in the following Zoogeographic Regions: Northern and Central Andes (Parker et al.1996).
