Distribution in the Americas

The Hoary-throated Spinetail occurs in gallery forests along the tributaries of the rio Branco in the extreme northern Amazon Basin, in the state of Roraima in Brazil and in the Rupunani district in adjacent Guiana (Remsen 2003, Vale et al. 2007). The species’ geographic range limits were extensively surveyed and are now well-known (Vale et al. 2007). The Hoary-throated Spinetail occurs in gallery forest along 116 km of the rio Uraricuera, 120 km of the rio Tacutu, 183 km of the Rio Surumu, 80 km of the Rio Mau (known as Ireng River in Guiana), 46 km of rio Parimé, and 46 km of rio Cotingo (see Vale et al. 2007 for further details). The species occurs within the Rio Branco Gallery Forest Endemic Bird Area (EBA 063 in Stattersfield et al. 1998).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Figure 3. Savannas of northern Brazil and southern Guyana. The Hoary-throated Spinetail is restricted to the narrow (up to 0.5 km) strip of gallery forest along rivers within the large Amazonian savanna known as “Lavrado” in Brazil and Rupunani Savannas in Guyana (Figure 3).

These gallery forests do not entirely flood during the high-water season (June-August) and are characterized by shrubby vegetation with a dense understory dominated by vines and Inga sp. (Vale et al. 2007) (Figure 4). Figure 4. Gallery forest habitat of Hoary-throated Spinetail Synallaxis kollari.Based on satellite imagery from 2000, the species has 206 km2 of available habitat (see Vale et al. 2007 for further details).

Historical changes

The species has been extirpated from the type locality, and it is apparently absent from south of Fortaleza de São Joaquim on the rio Branco (Zimmer et al. 1997).
