Distribution in the Americas

It is a widespread species in the Southern Hemisphere, both in America and in Australia and Africa. For Mexico there have two photographic records of vagrant individuals in the Yucatan Peninsula.

It is rare in Yucatan Peninsula. It has been estimated that the range of occurrence of this species is between 1,000,000 to 10,000,000 km2, global population is estimated at between 3,300,000 to 3,400,000 individuals.

It is found on beaches and estuaries to the sea level, also on interior waters as lakes and rivers, and crop fields.
