The IUCN Red List status of Plain-breasted Piculet is Least Concern; the population trend, while not quantified, is believed to be one of decline (BirdLife International 2012).
The relative abundance of Plain-breasted Piculet is assessed as "fairly common" (Parker et al. 1996, Schulenberg et al. 2010).
Effects of human activity on populations
Human activity has little short-term direct effect on Plain-breasted Piculet, other than the local effects of habitat destruction. This species can occupy woody second growth, however, and so may be able to tolerate moderate levels of habitat disturbance.
